What Aja Ekadashi is

Aja Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of Bhadra. King Harishchandra, who gave up his kingdom and his family for the sake of truth, kept this fast on the advice of the sage Gautama and won back all he had lost. It is kept to come through hard times.

How families keep it

Those who keep the fast eat no grain or pulses that day; many take only fruit, milk and roots, and some take nothing at all. Lord Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi leaves, and the fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi.
