What Chhath Parva is

Chhath Parva is kept on Kartik Shukla Shashthi, six days after Laxmi Puja. It is the worship of Surya, the Sun, and of Chhathi Maiya, for the health and wellbeing of the family. It began in Mithila and Nepal's Terai and is now kept across Nepal and wherever Nepalis live. The festival runs four days and its fast is among the hardest: no food or water for about 36 hours.

How families keep it

On the main evening the family stands in a river or pond and offers arghya, with fruit and thekuwa, to the setting sun; the next dawn they offer it to the rising sun and the fast ends.

Each date is the day Nepal keeps the festival. Nepal publishes its patro one year at a time, so a date further ahead can move by a day when that year's patro comes out. For a ceremony, Pandit Ji confirms the day and the muhurta.
