What Indira Ekadashi is

Indira Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of Ashwin, inside the sixteen days of Sorha Sraddha. The Puranas tell of King Indrasen, who kept it to free his father's soul. Families keep it for those they have lost.

How families keep it

Those who keep the fast eat no grain or pulses that day; many take only fruit, milk and roots, and some take nothing at all. Lord Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi leaves, and the fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi.
