What Janai Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) is

Janai Purnima is the full moon of Shrawan. Men who wear the janai, the sacred thread, change it on this day after a bath and mantras. A pandit ties the raksha thread (doro) on everyone's wrist for protection. The day is also Raksha Bandhan, when sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers, and Rishi Tarpani, when the sages are remembered. Kwati, a soup of nine sprouted beans, is eaten.

How families keep it

Families go to a temple or invite Pandit Ji home for the janai and the raksha thread. Many make the pilgrimage to Gosaikunda in Nepal on this day.
