What Maghe Sankranti is

Maghe Sankranti is the first day of Magh, when the Sun enters Makar rashi and begins its northward course (Uttarayan). The coldest days are passing and the holy month of Magh begins. The Tharu community keeps it as Maghi, its New Year.

How families keep it

Families bathe early, at a river confluence such as Devghat when they can, and eat ghee, chaku, sesame laddu and yam. Many hold a puja and give to those in need.

Each date is the day Nepal keeps the festival. Nepal publishes its patro one year at a time, so a date further ahead can move by a day when that year's patro comes out. For a ceremony, Pandit Ji confirms the day and the muhurta.
