What Shattila Ekadashi is

Shattila Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of Magh. Shat is six and tila is sesame: sesame is used in the bath, rubbed on the body, offered in the fire, given with water to the ancestors, given away and eaten.

How families keep it

Those who keep the fast eat no grain and use sesame in the six ways. Lord Vishnu is worshipped, sesame is given away, and the fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi.
