On the full moon of Poush, families begin the Shree Swasthani Brata Katha, the story of Goddess Swasthani, of Shiva and Parvati and of the devotion of Goma Brahmani. One chapter is read aloud at home each evening for a month, until Magh Purnima. Many women keep the fast through the whole month for the wellbeing of their families.
How families keep it
The family gathers each evening, one person reads the day's chapter and all take the prasad. Some invite a pandit to begin and to complete the brata.
