What Haritalika Teej is

Haritalika Teej is Bhadra Shukla Tritiya. Women fast, many without food or water, and worship Shiva and Parvati: married women for the long life of their husbands, unmarried women for a good match. The story behind it is Parvati's long penance to win Shiva. The evening before, women gather for dar, a rich meal, and the festival ends with Rishi Panchami.

How families keep it

Women dress in red, sing and dance together and visit a Shiva temple; in Nepal the lines at Pashupatinath run through the day. Many families hold a Shiva puja or a Rudrabhishek.

Each date is the day Nepal keeps the festival. Nepal publishes its patro one year at a time, so a date further ahead can move by a day when that year's patro comes out. For a ceremony, Pandit Ji confirms the day and the muhurta.
