What Utpattika Ekadashi is

Utpattika Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of Mangsir. The Puranas tell that the goddess Ekadashi was born from Lord Vishnu on this day and slew the demon Mura; utpatti means birth. Those who take up the yearly round of Ekadashi fasts begin with this one.

How families keep it

Those who keep the fast eat no grain or pulses that day; many take only fruit, milk and roots, and some take nothing at all. Lord Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi leaves, and the fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi.
