What Yomari Punhi is

Yomari Punhi is the full moon of Mangsir. After the rice harvest the Newar community makes yomari, steamed dumplings of new rice flour filled with chaku and sesame, and offers them to Annapurna, the goddess of grain. The day is also Dhanya Purnima, and the Kirat community keeps Udhauli, giving thanks to nature as the cold season begins.

How families keep it

Families make yomari, offer the first ones in the grain store or the puja room and share the rest; children go singing from door to door for them.

Each date is the day Nepal keeps the festival. Nepal publishes its patro one year at a time, so a date further ahead can move by a day when that year's patro comes out. For a ceremony, Pandit Ji confirms the day and the muhurta.
