What Magh Purnima is

Magh Purnima is the full moon of Magh. The reading of the Shree Swasthani Brata Katha, begun a month earlier, ends with its last chapter, and so does the month of early-morning holy baths (Magh snan).

How families keep it

The family reads the final chapter and makes the closing offering of 108 of each item: threads, flowers, fruit and sel roti. Part is given to the husband or a son and the rest is set afloat in a river. Many invite a pandit for the closing puja.

Each date is the day Nepal keeps the festival. Nepal publishes its patro one year at a time, so a date further ahead can move by a day when that year's patro comes out. For a ceremony, Pandit Ji confirms the day and the muhurta.
