What Maha Shivaratri is

Maha Shivaratri is the night Falgun Krishna Chaturdashi holds, counted by the tithi at midnight. It is the night of Shiva: devotees fast through the day and keep awake in worship. Pashupatinath in Kathmandu draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and sadhus from Nepal and India.

How families keep it

Families visit a Shiva temple, offer water, milk and bel leaves on the Shiva linga and chant "Om Namah Shivaya". Many hold a Rudrabhishek at home or at the temple.

Each date is the day Nepal keeps the festival. Nepal publishes its patro one year at a time, so a date further ahead can move by a day when that year's patro comes out. For a ceremony, Pandit Ji confirms the day and the muhurta.
