Kag Tihar is Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, the first of the five days of Tihar, also called Yamapanchak. The crow is the messenger of Yama, the lord of death. Feeding it at the start of the festival is a prayer that it bring no sad news to the house in the year ahead.
How families keep it
Rice and sweets are set out for the crows on the roof or in the yard before the family eats.
