Dashain, or Bada Dashain, is the longest and greatest festival of the Nepali year. It runs through the bright half of Ashwin, from Ghatasthapana to Kojagrat Purnima, and honours the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasur. Families come home, however far away they live, to receive tika, jamara and blessings from their elders on Vijaya Dashami.
How families keep it
The kalash is set up and the jamara sown on the first day, Durga is worshipped for nine nights, and from the tenth day elders give the tika. New clothes, kites, swings and feasts fill the fortnight.

Each date is the day Nepal keeps the festival. Nepal publishes its patro one year at a time, so a date further ahead can move by a day when that year's patro comes out. For a ceremony, Pandit Ji confirms the day and the muhurta.
