Vijaya Dashami is Ashwin Shukla Dashami, the tenth day of Dashain and the day the whole festival leads to. It marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasur, and of Ram over Ravan: good over evil. Elders put the red tika of rice, yogurt and vermilion on the foreheads of those younger than them, place jamara on their heads and give their blessing with dakshina. Families cross cities and oceans to receive it.
How families keep it
The tika begins at the auspicious time Nepal announces each year and goes on in relatives' homes until Kojagrat Purnima. Families abroad often invite Pandit Ji for the puja before the tika.
